How to make the perfect bed with Garnet Hill

Let’s talk about something I feel very strongly about and that is the perfect bed. Now i’m not talking about the actual bed or even the mattress for that matter. I’m talking about the perfect sleeping, lounging, sink in and don’t want to ever leave kind of bed and I’m here to tell you how to make that happen.

One of the things I pride myself on is how comfortable our home is and that means I take my bed making very seriously. There is a formula I stick to and today i’m going to share with you exactly what you need to make your own perfect bed.

Foundation

I always start with the perfect feather bed topper for the mattress. I don’t care how comfortable our mattresses are, I still love the feeling and the look of a feather topper. It’s what I think takes the bed to the next level of comfort and I love how the extra layer makes the bed look so cozy and full.

Adding in a super fluffy comforter and the perfect pillows is next.

You want the comforter to be comfortable of course, but I also look for one that has a lot of volume. I love folding it back and having a lovely pile in the middle of the bed. So inviting, you just want to fall into it.

I also want one that is warm! It gets really cold in Indiana and I am just cold by nature, so warmth is really important to me when making my bed.

Depending where you are located you’ll want to check which comforter works best for you. If you are in a warmer climate you might want to find a comforter that is lightweight instead. I chose the Garnet Hill Channeled White Goose Down Comforter because I hate when all the feathers clump together inside of the comforter. This one has vertical channeled rows with ring stitching to prevent that very thing from happening which makes me very happy!

Pillows

Yes, pillows ya’ll, you guys know how important it is that you have a great sleeping pillow and I think I may have found them!

I have always searched for a great pillow because comfort is so important to me when I style my home and I’ve tried a ton.

I can honestly and from the bottom of my heart tell you that I LOVE our pillows!

The reason I chose the Primaloft Comfort Side Sleeper Pillow was of course, because we are both side sleepers but also because it has 2" gusseted side panels to support your head, neck and shoulders for proper alignment and because I personally have struggled with neck pain in the past, I need proper alignment!

They were named "The Best Overall Down-Free Pillow You Can Buy" by the Wall Street Journal and that is honestly what made me choose them and now that I have slept on them for a few weeks, I can say I haven’t had any neck issues at all.

I also really love how fluffy they are and stand up on their own which makes styling the bed even better!

Now lets talk sheets and all the other pretty things that come after you have created the perfect foundation for your bed.

I love a neutral bed and also love texture and pattern. When I discovered the Linnea Linen collection from Garnet Hill I knew I wanted to add it to my bedding collection. I have always gravitated towards the relaxed feel of linen and I will always love how inviting linen is with its wrinkled and less then perfect appearance. Linen has that perfectly, imperfect, appearance which suits me just fine. I don’t want to fall in to a bed that appears perfectly starched so I don’t even attempt to iron or steam my linen bedding because that is not real life! Maybe for some, but not for me.

I’m perfectly fine with some pretty wrinkles!

I like mixing up my bedding. I love layering different textures and patterns so this time around I added the Linnea fitted sheet, two Linnea linen pillowcases, two linen white pillowcases and then layered a white linen sheet. This formula for making the bed this way simplifies the morning routine of making the bed. I’ll show you why in just a little bit but first lets talk about adding in your duvet cover over your comforter and my easiest trick to putting one on the right way!

The White Company-10.jpg

First, I lay the comforter insert on my bed the direction that it will be when the bed is made. Then I lay the duvet cover, inside out, on top of it. The next step is to find the handy ties located at the corners of the duvet cover. Tie them to the loop at the corners of your comforter so that your comforter doesn’t shift around on the inside of the insert.

This prevents your insert from winding up in a big lump!

Now turn your duvet cover right side out and over your comforter, tie the remaining two corners and you should now be able to button up the duvet over your comforter as the final step. If you are still a little lost then check out my stories on IG where I go over in detail each step to make this process super easy to understand!

Okay, remember when I said I would explain why I like to add in a solid sheet over the flat floral sheet? Well, this is exactly why! I like to break up the matching pattern between the flat sheet and the duvet. I want pattern but I also don’t want it to feel overwhelming, so I break it up by using the solid flat sheet that I fold over the comforter and voila, a perfect and easy to make bed!

And lastly, I always, always, add a quilt or throw to the end of all my beds. I swear that my feet are always freezing cold when I get in to bed at night! I have no idea why that is? It could have something to do with the fact that we live in the midwest and its usually freezing temps outside but even in the summer I need my quilt because the air conditioning makes me chilly. I can’t win so I rely on my quilt to keep me warm and cozy. It’s practical and adds another layer to the bed, completing what I would consider the perfectly made bed!
