A Simple Guide to the Ultimate Holiday Taplescape

Some of the best memories I have in my home have one thing in common: my dining room table. While food certainly brings people together, I think the feeling the space emits can add tremendously to the experience. When my family and I sit down for dinner, I want them to feel comfortable, at ease…know that the things they offer up are of value. Today I’m sharing a few tips to stretch your Holiday dining experience far beyond good food and beautiful decor.

When I set my table, before anything else, I start with the necessities. I typically begin with my plates, silverware, and drinkware. I then build to the things I don’t want to have to get up for in the middle of a good story being shared. Salt, pepper, and a pitcher of water are a few of the things I add to garnish the table. I place these things in beautiful, yet functional containers like this pinch pot trio and pitcher from our Shoppe. This creates accessibility but also adds warmth and dimension to the tablescape. Items like these also give something to pass around the table. Sharing items around the table creates a partnership dynamic that I love watching my family, especially my kids, take part in.

After I’ve added the basics to the table, I go in and add items that introduce texture and comfort to the space. They may not be an absolute necessity to scarfing down a meal, but they add to the scene as a whole. Candles (apothecary from the Shoppe that I LOVE!) to cozy up the environment, greenery or fresh flowers to mimic a natural environment, and fresh table linens (to show some grace when things get messy!).

Once I feel good about the table itself, I look around my space and be sure to eliminate distractions so when we sit down for dinner, I’m not getting up or talking over the TV in the background. Turn off the TV, feed your pet, make sure the stove is turned off, etc.

Spend some time and thought on your tables capes this holiday season. Design with the people in mind and the feeling you want to evoke. And a friendly reminder from a perfectionist: it doesn’t have to be perfect. The more lived in, the better. Happy Holidays, friends. May your holiday tables be lovely and the memories you create around them even sweeter.
